Magnificent

reprint!  Masterfully printed by the great Hashiguchi
Goyo!

This
antique triptych is, of course, a Kitagawa Utamaro masterwork. The title is
Enjoying the Evening Cool on the Banks of the Sumida River. Without a doubt, Utamaro (Japanese, ca. 1750-1806) is one of the
most famous of all Japanese artists of the Edo
Period
. His classic portraits of courtesans, geishas and teahouse
waitresses are among the most sought after of all prints. In fact, many serious
collectors consider Utamaro’s beauties to be the very soul of Ukiyo-e, the art of the Floating World.

Originally published ca. 1795-1796 by publisher
Yamaguchi-ya Chūsuke.
This spectacular triptych was reprinted by the world famous studio
of Hashiguchi Goyo (1880 – 1921) ca. 1920 in a very small edition number.
Goyo’s reprints of Utamaro’s masterworks are among the finest ever made. This
is a unique opportunity to acquire one of his masterpieces. His red rectangular
Goyo seal is in the left margin of each panel.

Fabulous woodblock
reprint of women and children enjoying the cool of evening as they promenade
along the banks of the Sumida River.
One of the children carries a lantern that bears
the name of a famous restaurant and brothel, Onoshi fuhachi, that suggests the
women might be courtesans.
One of the many party
boats floating in the
tranquil waters of the famous
river has just shot off an aerial firework. The great Ryogoku Bridge is in the
background. A wonderful insight into life during the Edo period of old Japan.

This impressive original
antique
woodblock triptych would be striking displayed on your home or
office wall. It would be a wonderful choice for the antique print collector or
the interior decorator.

This would be a superb
choice for any collector.
It was made by Goyo from meticulously recarved wooden blocks
using exactly the same technique – and with the same excellent detail and rich
color – as the original.
Later edition prints like
this make an exciting addition to your collection and are a wonderful way to
decorate – at a small fraction of the staggering cost of a first edition print.

Matted and framed, this triptych
would make a stunning presentation by itself or as an impressive addition to an
arrangement with other prints. It is one you will be proud to display in your
home or office and is bound to become a cherished family heirloom.

Utamaro’s masterworks are in the collections of many of the
world’s great museums. Among them are the Metropolitan
Museum of Art
, New York; the Museum
of Fine Arts
, Boston; the British
Museum
, London; the Hermitage Museum,
Saint Petersburg, Russia; and the Tokyo
National Museum,
Tokyo.
