This antique watercolor painting by listed artist Carl Mauch depicts a man carrying a fishing rod and pail, walking down a Lake Michigan beach, with a wharf and horse-drawn wagon in the background.  The painting is in very good condition with no tears, holes, or stains. The picture is signed by the artist C. (Carl) Mauch in the lower left corner, along with where it was painted, “Evanston Shore” which would be Evanston, Illinois. The colors remain bright. The man, in a hat and red vest, is walking on a sandy beach with boats, trees, and sky in the background. Some stains do appear on the cream colored matt only, not on the painting, and the gold frame has some losses and is backed with wood panel, as shown in the photographs. The frame is 20 1/2″ by 17 1/2″. The mat reveal is 17 1/4″ by 14 1/2″. The painting reveal is 11 1/5″ by 8 1/2″.  I believe that the painting dates to the mid-to-late 1800’s…approximately 1860’s to 1880’s.

Carl Mauch (1854-1913) is a listed artist.  He was born in Stuttgart, Germany, which is where he studies art prior to emmigrating to the US.  He was influenced by, and painted in an Impressionist manner, in and around Chicago, Illinois.
